"Martina, the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale" by Carmen Agra Deedy, J 398.2, Dee

"Martina, the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale" by Carmen Agra Deedy, is an adorable picture book. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story itself is entertaining and comical. It is about Martina the cockroach's experience with finding a husband. The time has come for her to find a mate, and Martina doesn't have a clue where to look. Her grandmother teaches her the secret to finding a suitable husband: spill coffee on his foot, and study his reaction. If he is temperamental, he will not make a good husband.
My favorite thing about this childrens book is that it incorporates Spanish words and phrases as much as possible. This makes the folktale even more rich and beautiful. Check it out!
